Iceland Cruise 2024 - Day Six - 6/19/2024
Port - Akureyri, Iceland
Exploring Akureyri and Lake Myvatn

As part of our exciting Icelandic journey, Day Six begins at the
Akureyri port, where we board our coach to explore the breathtaking landscapes of North Iceland. Here’s a glimpse into our adventure:

Geothermal Wonders at
Namaskard
Our first stop is the geothermal field of
Namaskard, a surreal landscape filled with bubbling mudpots, steaming vents, and colorful sulfur deposits. Walking through this area feels like stepping onto another planet, with vivid hues of red, orange, and yellow streaking the ground. The air carries the distinct smell of sulfur, reminding us of the powerful geothermal forces beneath our feet.

Dimmuborgir Lava Formations
Next, we visit
Dimmuborgir, a dramatic lava field renowned for its towering rock formations and caves. Known as “The Dark Fortress,” this area’s surreal beauty has even been featured in Game of Thrones. Exploring its labyrinthine paths among lava pillars and arches is an unforgettable experience.

Lunch and Pseudo-Craters in
Skutustadir
After marveling at Dimmuborgir, we head to
Skutustadir for lunch at a local restaurant. This picturesque town is famous for its pseudo-craters—unique geological formations resembling miniature volcanoes. A short stroll along well-marked trails allows us to appreciate these fascinating natural wonders while surrounded by lush greenery.

The Majestic
Godafoss Waterfall
On our way back to Akureyri, we pause at
Godafoss (“Waterfall of the Gods”), a stunning cascade with deep historical significance. Legend has it that Thorgeir, a chieftain in the year 1000, threw his pagan idols into the falls to symbolize Iceland’s conversion to Christianity. The sight of water tumbling over basalt cliffs is both awe-inspiring and serene.

This day-long excursion showcases Iceland’s unique blend of geological marvels and cultural heritage, leaving us with memories to cherish long after the cruise concludes.
