Iceland Cruise 2024 - Day Four - 6/17/2024
Grundarfjördur, Iceland
After leaving Grundarfjordur, we joined our tour group and began an incredible journey through several charming fishing villages nestled along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier-capped volcano loomed in the distance, adding a mystical touch to the landscape.
Our first stop was Djúpalónssandur Beach, where we took a short walk to marvel at the dramatic black sands and crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The beach’s rugged beauty and historical significance captivated us, especially the remnants of a shipwreck scattered along the shore.
Next, we continued toward Snæfellsjökull itself, famously described by Jules Verne in A Journey to the Center of the Earth as the gateway to a subterranean world. Standing before this glacier-volcano, we felt transported into Verne’s fantastical imagination: “Here we had entered the Earth by one volcano, and we had come out by another…” The glacier’s mystique was undeniable, and its panoramic views were breathtaking.
As we made our way to Arnarstapi, we passed the striking cliffs of Londrangar and admired their towering basalt formations shaped by centuries of wind and sea erosion. At Arnarstapi, we explored colorful lava formations and observed abundant birdlife in this idyllic fishing village. The scenery was surreal—a blend of vibrant nature and geological wonders.
Our journey concluded with a visit to Budir, known for its black lava fields and golden sand beaches. We then crossed Frodarheidi Heath back to Grundarfjordur, reflecting on the incredible sights and experiences that made this tour unforgettable.
